Moveshelf Information System for large-scale education and research of biomechanics; a use case with Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences

The Moveshelf Information System is well-known as the market-leading solution for clinical organizations seeking secure data storage, visualization and reporting of 2D and/or 3D movement analysis. It is less well-known that with its access solution and enterprise-ready features like scalable, secure data storage and database, integration with credential systems, ease of visualization without limitations of users and without need of any software installed, Moveshelf also perfectly fits the needs of academic organizations seeking to step up and professionalize their tooling for education and research of biomechanics.

September 2024 will be an exciting moment for our newest customer: the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS). With an initiative led by Nils Jongerius, PhD, AUAS' ambitions with the adoption of Moveshelf are twofold:
  1. have their own physiotherapy students perform captures and analyze their own gait data, supporting the education of 2D and 3D movement analysis, having them familiarizing with the state-of-the-art technologies they’ll use in clinics in their future careers.
  2. compound all these captures in a structured and curated large database of movement analysis, which they will be able to leverage to answer research questions, at an unprecedented scale.
In several courses throughout the academic year, students will get a hands-on, intuitive experience with gait analysis through interactive reports with not only synchronized videos and graphs, but the students will also use our newest feature: 3D avatar video overlay, aligning the 3D avatar perfectly on top of the subject walking. The 3D orientation of the avatar is automatically matched with each camera perspective as they skip through all the different, synchronized videos within that trial, and combine this view with videos and/or graphs. This feature provides prospective physiotherapists with unique opportunities to develop their therapist’s eye in identifying and diagnosing deviations from a healthy gait pattern.
Thanks to Moveshelf’s capabilities in integrating with Enterprise IT systems, the access from AUAS' students will be controlled by the AUAS' credential system (Microsoft Entra ID), allowing complete control of who has access to what data and supporting ease of revoking access at the end their courses. Additionally, no installations of any software is required and there’s no hassle with a limit in amount or seats, data security or data volume, so AUAS can focus on what really matters: teaching movement analysis.
