From clinics to classrooms: how Moveshelf supports movement analysis in any setting

Moveshelf’s cloud-based Information System for movement analysis has become an essential tool for clinical care in hospitals and specialized clinics worldwide. At its core, Moveshelf offers a secure, compliant, and centralized infrastructure for managing and visualizing movement data. Its modern, interactive visualizations enable teams to easily access synchronized videos, graphs, spatiotemporal parameters, and 3D views from any device - whether in a hospital, rehabilitation center, or at home. Through Moveshelf’s unique integrations with hospital IT systems, like Electronic Health Record (EHR) and credential systems, movement data has become as easily accessible as any other medical imaging while being in full control of who has access.

Perhaps less well-known, the classroom is another environment where Moveshelf plays a valuable role. That is, Moveshelf isn’t just about improving clinical workflows, it’s also a key resource for education and professional development. From training specialists in movement analysis to preparing the next generation of movement science professionals, Moveshelf bridges the gap between clinical care and education. This article highlights how Moveshelf supports its customers in achieving high quality education on movement analysis.

From the start of becoming a Moveshelf customer, University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), Roessingh Center for Rehabilitation / Research and Development (RRD) and Amsterdam University Medical Center (AUMC) adopted Moveshelf as their solution not only for clinical movement analysis, but also for hosting their gait courses. These yearly gait courses educate 20 to 40 specialists each, including rehabilitation physicians, orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, orthopedic shoe technicians, and movement lab operators from hospitals and clinics of all sizes. The courses advance the understanding and adoption of movement analysis in clinical practice, ultimately improving the quality of care for patients with movement disorders.

Even joining efforts to host a gait course by multiple organizations for combining clinical expertise and focus in a new, advanced gait course is being done with Moveshelf. In a partnership lead by RRD and joined by the Sint Maartenskliniek, both institutions hosted their own clinical case studies in their own separate Moveshelf environment. This allows these organizations to maintain full control of the data, without local copies. Also, the visualizations of their respective data formats work just like in their clinical environments. The participants of this gait course never notice the different host though, as their guest account has a special privilege assigned to visit both gait course environments. They get directed by clicking the link in the digital course materials, ensuring a secure and uninterrupted learning experience. All in all, this demonstrates a great use case for multi-organization collaboration through the Moveshelf Information System.

Beyond training clinical professionals, Moveshelf is increasingly being used to teach bachelor’s and master's students in Human Movement Sciences, physiotherapy, and related fields. For example, Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC+) has been using Moveshelf for hands-on learning with master's students for the past four years, providing temporary guest access to around 40 students annually. Similarly, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) has implemented Moveshelf on a large scale for bachelor students, with individual access based on their student credential system.

Comprehensive movement analysis: visualizing EMG data, kinematics, and synchronized video recordings in a split-screen view, with automatic face blurring for privacy.

Teaching professionals and students with real-world data is a crucial aspect of gait courses, and Moveshelf is proud to support it. However, it also presents challenges since movement data often contains sensitive, personal information. Moveshelf addresses this concern with its video anonymization tool. By automatically blurring faces in case study videos, Moveshelf ensures that both subjects and personnel visible in the videos are protected. Another important feature for movement analysis courses is a simple and quick access to data and visualizations. With Moveshelf, there's no need for installations or local storage space. Simply open the link to Moveshelf from the digital course material in a browser and we’ll let your students focus on what really matters - the course itself.
